Open Educational Resources and New Skills

Hello everyone! Today I am going to be talking about my experiences in my EME2040 class, open educational resources (OERs), and about new skills I acquired working on a PowerPoint for information dissemination assignment. Hope you enjoy!

I am in the online class of EME2040. My overall experiences with the class has been positive, with the weekly assignments being clearly laid out. The assignments have also been interesting and engaging. I suppose one thing I wish was a bit different is for the details of some of the assignments to be posted more in advance, especially since it is an online class. However, I understand why things are kept to a more defined schedule rather than a more work-at-your-own-pace kind of schedule. Furthermore, by keeping it to a more defined schedule, it keeps the class on the same page. I would probably do same in the future teaching an online class due to the advantages of it, such as, being able to assign group work. I would also post videos of any important zoom meetings or announcements so that students can reference them later or in their own time.

Open educational resources are open-domain, free access materials for the public to use. It can be teaching materials and resources, or learning materials and resources and more. OER Commons is a digital library of open resources. It provides resources such as lesson plans, articles on tools and resources, classroom activities, and more. It also has access to groups and a community who continually builds the resources available. The goal of the webpage is to grow and improve curriculum.

Assignment 4: PowerPoint for Information Dissemination was an assignment that I learned a lot from. It was a challenging assignment, as the PowerPoint Show was something I never had experience in. It gave me experience in recording my voice over a PowerPoint in order to give a lesson. This can be great to use in the future of teaching any online class, so that the students not only receive the visual aid of the PowerPoint, but also receive the auditory aid and detailed information my voice provides. I was also relieved to learn you can re-record one slide at a time, rather than having to go through the whole PowerPoint in one go. For next time, I will need to work on how to make my voice sound more confident. Overall, it was a good experience that I learned a lot from.
